INSTRUCTOR’S RECAP

November 2, 2011

About the November 1, 2011 Class Session

The In Class Demo Dilemma

We had a visitor to our classroom last week who was conducting a study by my request. In the study data is collected regarding the percentage of students who fully participate (give their full attention and follow along) when an instructor does a presentation or demonstration in a computer classroom.

Our visitor collected data for the 20 minutes that I presented the Photoshop Basics PowerPoint and demonstrated how to select areas, fill them with color,  modify the colors using the Hue/Saturation/Lightness sliders, taking a photo with Photo Booth, and the times of guided practice.

As you know much of the Tuesday’s instruction dealt with learning and practicing Photoshop skills. The majority of the rest of this semester will involve learning and practicing the many basics skills you will need to master in the Adobe Creative Suite in order to be a successful student in the Art & New Media program.

With this in mind consider the following data that was collected in our classroom during that time:

• 50% of the students in class were engaged appropriately, following my demonstration for the entire 20 minutes.

• 30% of the students were engaged appropriately ONLY when I was at their workstation.

• 10% of the students were engaged appropriately more than half of the time.

• 10% of the students were engaged appropriately less than half of the time

Why Am I Sharing This Information With You?

As the Center for New Media mission states:

The Center for New Media’s purpose is to offer career-based, industry-standard instruction for students to ensure each has the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for successful employment in the new media industry. It provides a creative and open learning environment by allowing students to combine coursework to achieve certificates and associates degrees in animation, game art, graphic design, illustration, time-based media, web design  interactive media, and web production technology.

I’m sharing this data because it is our mission, and my personal desire, to do what ever I can to ensure that you have the knowledge, skills and the experience needed for successful employment in the new media industry.

My classroom experience has shown me that the students that made up the 50% that were engaged and following the presentation/demonstration will be better prepared to successfully complete the lessons assignment accurately and will do better in the class overall. Students that make it a practice to fully engage with the instructor and other students during their time here at the Center for New Media will be more successful.

Because I care about your success I ask you to make every effort to engage in the “task at hand” when you are in the classroom.
